Jose Miguel de Oliveira Simoes

Lupe

Education

Jose graduated with distinction in Telecommunications and Computer Engineering in 2006 at Instituto Superior das Ciencias do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE), Portugal. He also studied at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Brazil.

Expertise

From 2006 - 2008 he was working at Netcall (1st Portuguese VoIP provider) where he was responsible for Business Development and Network Operations. As Business Consultant he was responsible for leading/recommending investments and partnerships, identify opportunities for improvement by proactively optimizing the innovation process and manage interconnection process between telecommunication providers. As Network Engineer, he was responsible for the development of network designs and solutions, areas of datacenter, storage, physical security, software and emerging technologies, as well as for the conception and development of the Netcall “minibox” product. Among his duties he lead a small team of people working in support and infrastructure.

Research

Jose is currently investigating Quality of Experience (QoE) from the user perspective. In this context, QoE refers to the subjective measure from a user’s perspective of the overall value of the service provided. The main driver for this idea is related to the fact that these days, more and more services are available to customers; however most of the times these are inadequate and don’t reflect all users needs. In order to overlap this situation, his research is focused into six main topics:

•    Contextualization – capability to match contents and services to user contexts. These can be classified into geographical location, user preferences, communities or simply temporal based contexts.
•    Personalization – ability to deliver personalized media (services or contents) to the final user by matching his preferences and interests into a global context, providing at the end a final service tailored to address the specific needs of the consumer.
•    Adaptation – possibility to adapt services and contents according to the type of user and different end terminal used to consume the media. The Adaptation research is highly correlated with Contextualization and Personalization.
•    Interactivity – enhancing the way a service is consumed. Allowing the user to interact with a service, creates a whole new world of possibilities and business scenarios.
•    Mobility – describes one's ability to use technology while moving. This will enable Ubiquitous and Pervasive computing scenarios where users experience services anywhere, anyhow, at anytime.
•    Privacy – capability for the user to possess and control its own data. Moreover it should have the right to dispose and distribute it when he finds necessary. Possibility to opt-in and opt-out.

Addressing mainly advertising scenarios, the research will explore the following topics:

Social Networks
•    Correlate spatial proximity with social proximity;
•    Use social distance for recommendation systems;
•    Study Demographics of users;
•    Combine data from different social networks.

Reality Mining techniques
•    Overcome discrepancy between online and offline networks;
•    Provide awareness about people actual behaviors;
•    Extract patterns from biologic “honest signals”;
•    Correlate data and extrapolate future occurrences.

Context-aware technologie (Adaptation of content or advertising according to)
•    Network conditions;
•    Terminal;
•    Environment;
•    External sources (weather, traffic, light, speed, temperature, presence, location, etc.).

During his research, he will focus on how to improve the way services are offered and consumed by services providers and customers, respectively. New business models that can arise from such scientific improvements will also be covered. At this point in time, the results of such research will be mostly interesting for the Advertising and Media industry (and consequently Internet and Telecommunication worlds).
