Research & Development

The chair „Architekturen der Vermittlungsknoten“ has a long history in research and development on Next Generation Networks (NGN) and their evolution towards the Future Internet (FI).

Bridging the gap between these two domains of NGN and FI, the NGN to Future Internet Evolution (NGN2FI) [1] aggregates both research directions and provides the expertise and technologies for future communication technologies offering seamless access to services and applications related to various application domains.

Taking advantage of our experiences gained over the recent years and our developments of Next Generation Network (NGN) infrastructures and services (including IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), 5G research and Service Delivery Network (SDN)‏) we actively and extensively contribute to the evolution of the Future Internet (FI) (including the Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE) [2] Initiative and the Future Internet Public Private Partnership (FI-PPP) [3] core platform and usage areas), thus fostering the evolution of NGNs towards the FI (NGN2FI), and as well focussing on the progressing convergence of human-to-human and machine-to-machine communications within emerging Smart City infrastructures.

In this regard, the globally recognised testbed toolkits developed by TU Berlin AV and Fraunhofer NGNI [4] - such as 5G Playground [5], Open5GCore, [6] OpenSDNCore [7], Open5G-MTC [8], OpenMTC [9], OpenIMSCore [10], OpenEPC [11], FITTeagle [12], Packet Tracking [13], Telco Communicator Suite, and WebRTC Telco Stack - are building the foundation for prototyping various Future Internet Services Platforms and Smart City applications.

TUB AV positions itself as research unit driven by evolutionary FI research and is actively contributing in the areas resource and large-scale testbed management, operation and federation to support a core research platform for the benefit of industry and academia, and our information society in general. TUB AV as one of the key players in the FI research communicates in Europe is involved in many projects under the umbrellas of the FIRE Initiative and the FI-PPP Program that are leading the Europe FI research and development.
