Measurement and Monitoring

Making observations is fundamental for experimental research. Future Internet Experimental facilities have to provide sophisticated and flexible tools to support scientists and their experiments by logging experiment results and monitoring environment conditions. The provisioning of measurements in a testbed can also help experimenters by providing a standardized input for adaptive algorithms under test. 

Scientists who perform experiments usually want to proof a theory, investigate a phenomenon or compare own approaches to others. Monitoring tools in an experimental facility should be flexible in the sense that experimenters are able to zoom in or out to investigate traffic with different granularities. The tools should provide information about the accuracy of result data to provide comparability with results from others.

Furthermore, monitoring tools provide the necessary information about the infrastructure resources and about the running services and applications as well. Monitoring data obtained from various measurements and monitoring tools is used for assurance the health and the performance of the infrastructures and also for management and optimization purposes.

AV Monitoring Solutions

We are offering monitoring tools and solutions for the academia and industry. Some of them are already used in many national and international projects. Packet Tracking is one of our monitoring tools, which is a passive (one-way delay) measurement capabilities solution used for analyzing the impact of transmission delays for synchronization messages, to evaluate new multipath routing approach, to enable on demand packet traceback, and for other purposes in terms of functional compositions. Another monitoring solution is based on the ZABBIX open source tool following the client-server model. The later solution is used as a monitoring system of the BonFIRE experimental facility. This system supports measurements and monitoring at multiple levels:

  • Infrastructure-level monitoring
  • VM-level monitoring
  • Software/application-level monitoring

Currently we are focusing on developing a generic measurement and monitoring system for federated Future Internet research and experimentation infrastructures. It will support a generic management of federated measurement and monitoring resources from heterogeneous infrastructures (wired and wireless, virtualized and non-virtualized, etc.). This means harmonizing data collected from various monitoring tools. Then on-request providing measurement data to users in a unified data representation.
