Open 5GCore and OpenSDNCore: Beyond OpenEPC towards 5G Technologies

OpenEPC is a prototype implementation of the 3GPP Evolved Packet Core (EPC) that enables academia and industry researchers and engineers around the world to obtain a practical look and feel of the capabilities of the Evolved Packet Core.

Starting from 2008 TU-Berlin AV together with Fraunhofer FOKUS have very successfully developed the OpenEPC project, currently covering, with prototype implementations, all the functional elements in the 3GPP Evolved Packet Core (EPC) / Systems Architecture Evolution (SAE) technologies up to 3GPP Release 12. After almost 6 years of R&D and an exceeding accomplishment of targets, at the end of 2013 it was time to move on towards the 5G system: Open5GCore represents the evolution of the Core Network testbeds towards the 5G environment. The Open5GCore toolkit targets the following research directions:

  • 5G Radio Support Research: A new Radio requires a new Network
  • Wireless Convergence: The future includes LTE and WiFi
  • Total Convergence: Fixed, Satellite and Backhaul Integration
  • Network Functions Virtualisation & Network Virtualisation
  • Edge Network Support
  • Software Engineering based Telco
  • Cognitive Management Systems
  • Robustness and Security
  • Devices and Applications Support

OpenSDNCore is a practical implementation of the future network evolution paradigms, realizing Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) and Software Defined Network (SDN) concepts, providing early prototyping of a service enablement platform on top of common infrastructure components.

TU Berlin – AV together with Fraunhofer FOKUS have been working on the OpenSDNCore toolkit, which is a software toolkit enabling R&D in the fields of carrier-grade cloud based infrastructures. Specifically addressing telco needs, including features for:

  • Management and Orchestration
  • Flexible inter-data center networking
  • Interaction with physical infrastructure
  • Robust virtual network support
  • Network functions placement
  • Service chaining
