Teaching

Introduction

AV cooperates closely with the chair Open Distributed Systems (ODS) where Prof. Magedanz also gives lectures.

The chair AV offers lectures, seminars, and project courses to graduated students aiming for their Diploma or Master in the fields of electrical engineering, computer sciences, technical computer sciences, or industrial engineering.

Starting with summer 2017 our curriculum will be changed. Dedicated lectures on 5G ("5th Generation Mobile Networks")  and IIoT ("Industrial Internet of Things") will be offered in summer only, whereas the "5G and IIoT Seminar" and the "5G and IIoT Project" will be offered in both summer and winter. These seminar and project courses are performed in close cooperation with Fraunhofer FOKUS and offer challenging development tasks eventually contributing to the globally recognized state of the art AV/FOKUS technology testbeds / labs. Ideally Students will listen to 1-2 lectures and practice their gained knowledge in 1-2 consecutive project courses, which provides a solid foundation for a Diploma or Master thesis in these highly interesting field of converging networks and services.

This lecture treats fundamental concepts, architectures, protocols and interfaces of current and future open services platforms – based on converging network technologies such as wireless and wired telecommunication networks, 5th Generation Mobile Networks and Software-based networks. Main topics are 5G, Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networks (SDN). Graduates of this lecture are endued with competences in the following areas: services, protocols, and elements of infrastructures within classical wired and mobile circuit-switched telecommunication networks, 5th Generation Mobile Networks and Software-based networks.

The lecture "Industrial Internet of Things" (SS) treats fundamental concepts, architectures, protocols and interfaces of current and future Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platforms, based on the converging operational technologies (OT) and information and communication technologies (ICT).

Graduates of this lecture are endued with competences in architectures, protocols, and technologies for connectivity, communication,
(semantic) data exchange and (fog-based) virtualization used within Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) use cases. They will further be able
to identify and systematically solve prospective challenges of future IIoT developments and applications.

In this seminar current research topics in the context of 5G and the Internet of Things are presented. Subsequently, students choose one topic of a wide range of possible subjects, work intensively on the selected matter and produce a written report that should cite interesting articles, converence papers, or white papers. The major goal of this seminar is the intensive discussion of current questions in the field of 5G and the Industrial Internet of Things. Graduates of this module are endued with competences regarding current research activities, research results and trends in the context of classic telecommunication systems, Software-based networks and the Internet of Things. Furthermore, the seminar teaches the students methodical competences to do literature research and presentations in a scientific environment independently.

In this project already known topics from the modules „Offene Kommunikationssystem“, “5th Generations Mobile Networks” and "Industrial Internet of Things" will be used in practice. For this, selected topics in the context of 5G, NFV, SDN, IoT, Service Composition, Web Mash Ups, Identity and Policy Management, Converged Instant Messaging, IP-TV, video streaming, Infrastructure as a Service, virtualization, Machine-2-Machine, Evolved Packet Core and IP Multimedia Subsystem will be treated in detail. Graduates of this module are endued with competences in the following areas: services, protocols, and elements of infrastructures within classical wired and mobile circuit-switched telecommunication networks, Software-based networks or the Internet of Things. Furthermore, they learn to use this knowledge in practice and have the ability to accomplish development tasks in small groups, to document the procedures, and to present the results. They can independently perform the necessary literature research and develop own concepts.
