ElasTest: a cloud-based testing service platform for testing complex distributed large software systems

Madrid, June 1 st 2017. The ElasTest project, with an € 5M of EU funding under the Research and Innovation action from the Horizon 2020 program kicked-off in January 2017. Partners from academia, research institutions and IT companies are working together with the overall aim to offer an elastic platform for testing complex distributed large software systems to help end-to-end testing.

The goal of the ElasTest project is to increase software quality by reducing the complexity of software testing on large distributed systems in the Cloud. The project aims to reduce the time-to-market of software projects, increasing the quality of the resulting software product, reducing the possibility of failures and improving the perception of the software both by the end user and the developers who can perform more complex tests in less time.

The ElasTest project aims to offer a flexible open source testing platform for rapid and accurate end-to-end testing to significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the testing process and the overall quality of large software systems. The demand for larger and more interconnected software systems is constantly increasing, but the ability of developers to satisfy this demand is not evolving accordingly.

Discovering the design defects in any software, is equally difficult, for the samecomplexity reasons. In fact, the most limiting factor in delivering complex software timely is software validation, which typically requires very costly and complex testing processes to ensure the software is free of errors.

AV OF TU Berlin and Fraunhofer FOKUS supporting the first ETSI NFV interoperability Plugtest with

From 23rd January till 3rd February 2017, 40 commercial and open-source-implementations of the second version of the ETSI NFV (Network Function Virtualization) standard that was released in autumn 2016 were tested in Madrid. AV - Next Generation Networks and Fraunhofer FOKUS provided Open Baton, an ETSI NFV MANO compliant and vendor neutral framework for management and orchestration of network functions.

„We have successfully tested the virtual network functions of 14 participant companies during the two weeks of the first ETSI NFV Interoperability Plugtest in Madrid. We gained a lot of experience managing and orchestrating carrier-grade Virtual Network Functions, which will be drivers for further developments of Open Baton”, says Guiseppe Carella, researcher from the the Chair AV - Next Generation Networks. „The smooth integration of third parties VNFs and NFV Infrastructures was achieved thanks to the very extensible plugin mechanisms provided by the Open Baton framework. Providing an extensible mechanism for integrating with different versions of OpenStack APIs, and VNF management system, is a key for success of NFV MANO frameworks.”Open Baton allows for rapid prototype development of new network functions without the need for changing the orchestrating logic. The platform enables a virtual functional development on a NFV Infrastructure and thereby forms a bridge between infrastructure providers, who want to know more about network services and service providers who require suitable infrastructure for the virtualization.Preceding the Plugtest, a remote-test with 29 Labs was carried out in November 2016. The final evaluation report will shortly be published by ETSI.

Fraunhofer FOKUS delivers scientific basis for “Zukunftsoffensive Gigabit-Deutschland“

NGNI/AV experts supported the production of a research study on the Requirments for the German Gigabit Network Infrastructure 2025, which was used as major input for the new German Gigabit Initiative Action plan.  

Prof. Hauswirth and Prof. Magedanz presented the final Study to the Netzallianz group and Minister Dobrindt on November 8th, 2016 on week before the national IT Summit. The basis for the key features is the study "Netzinfrastrukturen für die Gigabit-Gesellschaft" (“Network infrastructures for the Gigabit-society") launched by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure at the initiative of the “Netalliance" and carried out by FOKUS. The key features describe the steps towards a gigabit society and the necessary actions required therefore. Constituent parts among others are the new mobile standard 5G and intelligent networks. 

“From the analysis of the various application areas within the framework of the study, the demands for the expansion of network intelligence can be derived. Apart from the transport of data, in the future the network will assume further functions and provide services. The basis for this is the visualization of network functions: The network adapts dynamically and differentiates the requirements of various applications", said Prof. Dr. Manfred Hauswirth, Director of Fraunhofer FOKUS on the occasion of the release.

Apart from the open internet with free access to content and innovative services e.g. multimedia communication services, in future there will be special networks with a higher degree of service quality and data security for example in E-Health applications. The type of networks are various forms of the same infrastructure that are optimized and composed using technologies like network slicing and dynamic network management, for the supporting applications. Thereby all types of networks are required. A significant driver of network intelligence will be the 5G technologies, which are expected commercially from 2020.

UCT Demo on "Smart City Application Use Cases Across Multiple Horizontal Domains" at SATNAC 2


The Southern African Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (SATNAC) is the continent’s leading ICT conference where Industry, Academia and Operators converge. It provided a platform for academic and industry partners to share ideas, current work and future research directions. Based on the long successful cooperation among FOKUS, TU Berlin and the University of Cape Town, the demos showed the usage of the OpenMTC platform in different IOT Use Cases. Three use cases, namely smart home energy management; environmental monitoring and emergency services using remote robotic control were showcased.

The team at UCT is Neco Ventura, Joyce Mwangama, Nyasha Mukudu, Nataizya Sikasoti, John Lewis and Fredrick I Chisanga.

SoftFIRE - First open call announcement


The SoftFIRE project consortium is happy to announce the first open call for experimenters interested in NFV and SDN technologies. The different partners of the SoftFIRE project consortium have been quite busy in the last months building a federated infrastructure based on open source technologies like FITeagle, Open Baton, and OpenStack. This infrastructure brings together different heterogenous testbeds providing SDN and NFV capabilities for experimenting with Programmability, Security, and Interoperability aspects in order to boost the developments of a 5th Generation of Mobile Networks. In addition, some testbeds offer Radio Access Technologies in order allow experimenters using Mobile Devices attached to a geographically distributed mobile network infrastructure.
Fraunhofer FOKUS and TU Berlin are leading the activities related with the infrastructure instantiation: FITeagle will offer a FIRE-based northbound interface to 3rd parties who wants to program their experiments in an automated way, while Open Baton will serve as NFV Orchestrator for setting up different network slices on top of a distributed OpenStack-based infrastructure. Finally, OpenDayLight and ONOS will be integrated and offered to experimenters in order to instantiate virtual networks on top of the distributed SDN Infrastructure offered by JolNET (the Telecom Italia testbed).

The SoftFIRE project is now ready to receive proposals for experiments to be carried out on the Federated Testbed. There are at least two objectives which have to be fulfilled by experimenters interested in submitting a proposal: either enhancing the testbed developing or testing new functionalities, or producing and validating new services, systems and applications that can benefit of such distributed SDN/NFV infrastructure.

Open Baton at the 2nd OPNFV Summit

The 2nd OPNFV Summit, June 20-23 in Berlin, Germany, was a great success with 620 people in attendance from the NFV ecosystem. 300 attendees joined for the Design Summit that included events with ARM NFV Ecosystem, FD.io/DPDK, ONOS + CORD, ONF, OPEN-O and OpenDaylight.

During these days there were several interesting discussions on the upcoming projects and research items in NFV and SDN. This year is considered the Orchestration year, where many interesting projects around ETSI MANO have been launched by different organizations. This is generating discussions and debates in the international communities. It is still unclear if/what will be a convergence towards a common information/data modeling of virtualized network functions and services. The initiative has been represented by Prof. Thomas Magedanz who gave an interesting presentation about the Open Baton project and its important role in the emerging federated SDN testbeds. Considering the fragmentation of the current ecosystem, it is rather important to have solutions which are easily extensible and flexible enough to accommodate several use cases. Open Baton, with its second release is modeled around an event-driven architecture; it provides several mechanisms for supporting different use cases. The upcoming integration with the ONOS platform will allow the instantiation of end-to-end virtual networks for the initial prototypes of network slicing concepts.

IEEE SDN & EIT Digital: Federated Testbeds Workshop Minutes and Presentations are online

On 3-4 May 2016, twenty thought leaders from the IEEE SDN Initiative, EIT Digital, service providers, industry and academia gathered for a two-day workshop in San Francisco, California to discuss the idea of a Federated Testbed (FTB) that would allow accelerated development of SDN and NFV as two important components of 5G era networks.

A new, international Open Testbed Community (OTC) emerged from an intensive workshop on federated testbeds that took place in San Francisco the week of May 3rd. This workshop was spearheaded by leaders from the IEEE SDN Initiative1 and EIT Digital2 . As we move from the era of protocols to the era of innovation in the global Information and Telecommunication ecosystem there is an opportunity to consolidate disjointed development efforts. This opportunity will leverage Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) for agile, robust, interoperability between SDN islands. The workshop culminated in a significant intent to start an Open, Federated Testbed (OFTB) by interconnecting three existing centers of expertise based in the USA and Europe. The outcome of these efforts will be reported in the Berlin5GWeek event in November 2016. The workshop brought new collaboration and support for the IEEE SDN Initiative that is building an engineering catalog of testbeds, toolkits and software that can be rated by the technical community. They will also track testing requests to better coordinate effective use of OTC resources and prioritize testing. This nicely complement the effort of EIT Digital to expand the Federated Testbed (FTB) started in 2016 and under expansion that can be used to stimulate innovation in the area of 5G and future communications services.

The Title of the PhD is: “Application-derived Communication Protocol Selection in M2M Platforms for Smart Cities"
Supervisors have been Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz (Technische Universität Berlin), Prof. Dr. Ventura (University of Cape Town), and Prof. Dr. Küpper (Technische Universität Berlin).
Asma Elmangosh had a scholarship from Lybia and worked the last 4 years on this interesting Smart City topic and published numerous papers on the FOKUS OpenMTC extensions. She will leave us and wants to continue her academic career. The TUB AV and FOKUS NGNI Teams wish her success for the future.

EMBERS Plenary Meeting

On the 21st and 22nd of March Ronald Steinke, Thomas Günther and Alexander Willner joined the plenary meeting of the project EMBERS (Enabling a Mobility Back-End as a Robust Service) in Aveiro, Portugal. The innovation project aims to bring the Citibrains SmartCity backend solution to market by testing and extending it within the two FIRE facilities FUESCO Playground in Germany (using the standard compliant OpenMTC framework) and the FIT IoT-Lab in France (using a wide range of programmable sensors).

3rd ARCADIA Plenary Meeting

Our researchers Dr. Stefan Covaci and Tran Quang Thanh participated at the
3rd ARCADIA Pleary Meeting in Galway, Ireland at the Insigth Center for
Data Analytics (DERI).
They gave a successful "on-line" Demo of our FIWARE Security Enablers
UseCase, in which the TU researchers have integrated the FI-STAR Testbed
(Secure Telemonitoring App using the FI-STAR / FIWARE Security and Privacy
Enablers deployed on our Back-End DC and Front-End) with OpenBaton. Next
step will be the replacement of OpenBaton with the ARCADIA Smart
Controller (once this will be released in Apr. 2016) and the benchmarking
of the performance and capabilities of the ARCADIA Smart Controller
against other orchestrators. They have also presented their intermediate
results concerning the deliverable D4.2 and the Risk Assessment (TUB
responsibility for both).
The next presentation of the demo will be at the NetFUtures 2016 Event in
the ARCADIA booth in Brussels, on 21-23 April 2016.

"Semantic-Based Management of Federated Infrastructures for Future Internet Experimentation"

The research of this thesis has focused on interoperability between
heterogeneous, distributed systems. The thesis applied research
originated from the Semantic Web to address the challenge of information
exchange between federated testbeds for Future Internet experimentation.
The thesis provides a formal information model, an abstract
architecture and a proof-of-concept implementation for the semantic life
cycle management of distributed experiments across multiple interfaces,
data models and infrastructures.

The ARCADIA project aims to provide a novel reconfigurable by design highly distributed applications’ development paradigm over programmable infrastructure. The main objective is to facilitate application developers to develop software that is able to take advantage of the underlying infrastructure, while in parallel support the deployment and dynamic configuration of applications in an optimal and autonomic manner.

The ARCADIA partners are working on delivering the first version of the novel, powerful tool that will allow software developers to take full advantage of the modern network and computer infrastructures. The majority of these infrastructures offer a wide range of configuration options and capabilities that can be programmed using the suitable commands or applications. Nowadays, the behaviour of devices and equipment can be deeply affected programmatically, concerning their energy efficiency, their flexibility in adapting to changing conditions and their functionality in general. But in most cases, this also requires a deep knowledge of vendor specific tools or technology specific parameters, while it is not humanly possible to intervene every time a new situation has arisen.

The ARCADIA platform will introduce an innovative way of tackling such issues. The basis will be a model describing all the characteristics of the infrastructure and the related actions that can be performed. The model will also include a great variety of application features that the developer would like his application to have. By using a well defined annotation language, the developer will be in position to label the application needs and to control its behaviour in a high level way. E.g. if requirement for only local access is set, the platform will automatically make the necessary network security settings and will restrict the incoming and outgoing traffic of the application.

The main role in this process belongs to the Smart Controller, the entity that includes functionality for configuring, deploying and reconfiguring if needed a Highly Distributed Application. In particular, it has the ability of interpreting the ARCADIA metadata and translating it into specific actions concerning the underlying resources. There is also the capability to communicate with another Smart Controller in case more resources are needed, without any human intervention. And of course, the platform is monitoring everything so as to guarantee that the optimum configuration has been selected, the application requirements are met and any policies set by the infrastructure provider are respected.

The partners of the project consortium envisage that the final outcome will offer to application developers the desired simplicity in building solutions with enhanced flexibility, availability and security characteristics. It is expected that ARCADIA platform will be warmly adopted by the programmers community, since it can provide independence from vendor specific tools, reduced product development costs and accelerated time to market, as well as access to useful network and service functions in a unified and easy to use way, just by incorporating some relevant annotations into the source code, according to the ARCADIA software development paradigm.

TEAM: an academic exchange programme between Europe and Asia in ICT

PhD students, postdocs and personal wishing to apply for a mobility scholarship between Europe and Japan and the Republic of Korea can now apply to the programme Technologies for information and communication, Europe - East Asia Mobilities (TEAM) up until the 25th of April 2016. This Erasmus Mundus Action 2 programme funded by the European Commission, focusing on Information Technology and Communication (ICT), aims to stimulate discussion among six European* and six Asian** world-class institutions.

The purpose of TEAM is to create a community of excellence in ICT, bringing together doctoral and post-doctoral students as well as academic and administrative staff from twelve institutions. It will fund 110 mobility scholarships ranging from one to twelve months, of which 72 are destined for Europeans. The beneficiaries of this programme will have their plane tickets paid and will receive a monthly allowance for the duration of their stay.
The first call for proposal of this project has already allowed 16 candidates to accomplish their research in a partner institution. The second call, launched in November 2015, will close on the 25th of April 2016 and will allow academic mobilities to take place within the 2016-2017 academic year.
This partnership composed of the higher education institutions, research institutions and industrial partners is designed to guide young talent towards the internationalization of their careers and the acquirement of new skills. TEAM also promotes the exchange of good practices between the leading scientists of the partnership as well as the establishment of joint programmes, in both research and education.

OpenMTC Delivery for the National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan

The OpenMTC team delivered the OpenMTC Rel. 4 upgrade to the National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in Taiwan and conducted two days hands-on training for the NCTU R&D team and students. The NCTU has been using the OpenMTC for teaching students the M2M/IoT technologies and for M2M/IoT R&D projects since release 1.

Open Baton: An open source Network Function Virtualisation Orchestrator (NFVO) fully compliant with the ETSI NFV MANO specification

The Open Baton project provides several components for building a complete environment fully compliant with the NFV specification.

It provides a Network Function Virtualisation Orchestrator (NFVO) exposing a dashboard for managing Network Services. It provides a Generic-VNMF and a lightweight Element Management System (EMS). It integrates with a multi-site NFV Infrastructure based on OpenStack and Docker.



SoftFIRE: SDN in the large will start in February

The Consortium is pursuing the integration of experimental facilities, testbeds and laboratories into a Federated testbed in the context of FIRE+.

Focus on three major key aspects: interoperability, programmability, and security. These properties will be analysed in terms of efficiency, functional responsiveness, end to end latency and generally end to end QoS. FOKUS and TUB will integrate the 5G-Playground in this large scale testbed. The 5G-Playground will provide on demand deployments of Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) providing a fully virtualised 5G-enabled core network using the NFV environment implemented by the Open Baton tool.

"Unification of Monitoring Interfaces of Federated Cloud and Future Internet Testbed Infrastructures"

The research of this thesis has focused on monitoring and measurement services across federated, heterogeneous ICT infrastructures.
The thesis addresses the challenge of the exchange of monitoring data across the federation due to the variety and heterogeneity of the tools and interfaces used.
The thesis provides an architecture for the unification of monitoring interfaces to enable a unified data representation across federated, heterogeneous infrastructures, accompanied with an ontology-based information model.

Successful Final Review of EU Project FI-STAR

“Digital Convergence and Seamless Connectivity for everyone and everything –  Bringing 5G, SDN/NFV and M2M/IOT together”

The final review meeting of the Future Internet Social and Technological Alignment Research project (FI-STAR), which is an EU project within the framework of FI-PPP, was successfully completed. The ultimate objectives of the project are to validate FI-WARE technologies in live environments and testing in real world healthcare, wellness and ambient assisted living situations and to build related cloud-based infrastructures. It will become self-sufficient after the end of the project and will continue as a sustainable business model with several partners. Based on the results of FI-STAR, Fraunhofer FOKUS is going to maintain a FI-WARE-based infrastructure along with upcoming projects.

The “Enabling a Mobility Back-End as a Robust Service (EMBERS)” is a new H2020 project that was kicked off on 18 December in Paris and will last for three years. EMBERS aims at providing an integrated open infrastructure based on a smart parking and a smart management solution. The infrastructure is going to be offered via a variety of generic interfaces, including oneM2M, ETSI M2M, OMA LWM2M and FI-WARE NGSI. Fraunhofer FOKUS is going to contribute to the project based on the OpenMTC and FUSECO playground: www.open-mtc.org.

DAAD - UNIFI Project Meeting

The DAAD-UNIFI meeting took place in Berlin at the Fraunhofer FOKUS Institute from November 3rd to November 6th, 2015. 28 participants from 11 countries participated.

Purpose of the University Future Internet, UNIFI, project is to establish sustainable teaching and research infrastructures in the areas of Future Internet through global collaboration among academic institutions facilitating researchers particularly master and PhD students to work together on state of the art technologies. These infrastructures are based on state of the art open source toolkits and additional Software packages which are publicly available. The initiative is happy to announce the expansion of new associations and partnerships stretching all over the world including Japan, Mexico, Colombia, Finland, Hungary, among other countries. TRESCIMO, EU-South Africa, making FIRE possible, final review and presentation

TRESCIMO stands for Testbeds for Reliable Smart City Machine-to-Machine Communication for Smart Cities, with a lifespan from January-2014 to December 2015. The combined technology from I2CAT (Spain), CSIR (South Africa), Fraunhofer FOKUS (Germany), Technical University of Berlin (Germany), University of CapeTown (South Africa), Eskom (South Africa), ABS (Israel)  made possible to build and run a smart environmental monitoring trial in Sant Vicenç dels Horts, near Barcelona, Spain and a smart energy trial in Guateng, near Pretoria, South Africa.

Apart from the trials, the project features also a Proof-of-Concept for enabling large-scale deployments to easily configure and switch the load of the data collectors in order to preserve the reliability and scalability of the service. The concept is called end-to-end programmable networking and was implemented by extending the EU and South African smart devices from both the trials, to interface with the Open5GMTC server that distributes the data collectors among the end devices using LWM2M device management protocol.

Another impressive result was enabling research and development activities for students in both South Africa and Germany through the usage of OpenSDNCore, OpenMTC and FITeagle. As a following up activity FITeagle will integrate with OpenBaton to have a open-source set of toolkits available worldwide for FIRE experiments.

On the 23rd of November, the project presented 4 demonstrations, one for each of the above mentioned R&D directions, at a special FIRE session workshop at the Department of Science and Technology (DST), South Africa, Pretoria, motivating new future collaborations between EU-SA for mutual goals.

OpenBaton: the new open-source platform for virtualization of network functions OpenBaton: the new open-source platform for virtualization of network functions

Fraunhofer FOKUS offers with OpenBaton the first open-source ETSI NFV standard-compliant platform for the virtualization of network functions. It addresses both network-operators as well as cloud computing service providers and is suitable for the virtualization of 5G and critical networks, as well as M2M and multimedia platforms.

There are many diverse networks such as fixed and mobile, large-scale operator networks and specialized enterprise ones. They consist of many hundreds of network functions which are currently running on physical components incurring high maintenance costs. With ETSI NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) these functions are transferred to software based implementations running on top of cloud infrastructure. Fostering the NFV environment, Fraunhofer FOKUS offers with OpenBaton the first open-source ETSI NFV standard-compliant platform for the virtualization of network functions. It addresses both network-operators as well as cloud computing service providers and is suitable for the virtualization of 5G and critical networks, as well as M2M and multimedia platforms.

CogNet, 5G PPP, Kick-Off

The first Cognitive Networks (CogNet) meeting took place in Dublin, Ireland on July 16th, 2015.

EU industry and research collaborators from Spain, Italy, Germany and Israel met in Ireland for the 5G PPP project. 

CogNet is a major 5G telecommunications project involving industry and university researchers over a 30-month period. It received funding of €5.97m under the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme. The project recognises that 5G technology will support billions of connected devices and that conventional IT systems and architectures are not currently designed to handle this scale.

IBM in Ireland, one of the collaborators on the project, hosted the kick off meeting at its technology campus in Dublin. One of the key goals of the project is to develop machine learning, data mining, autonomic technologies and algorithms that will be applied to enterprise scale 5G deployments, delivering self adapting solutions that will fit centralised architectures to distributed solutions that can handle substantial scale.

The team consists of members from IBM, Alcatel Lucent, Telefonica, as well as Fraunhofer FOKUS and University of Trento.

ARCADIA PROJECT: 1st plenary meeting and 1st technical meeting

The 1st plenary meeting of the ARCADIA project took place in Berlin from 19 to 20 of May 2015. It was organized by the Technical University of Berlin (TUB). All the partners were represented and the involved people had the chance to share their knowledge and to plan their next steps in progressing the project.

ARCADIA stands for a Novel Reconfigurable By Design Highly Distributed Applications Development Paradigm Over Programmable Infrastructure.

Tools will be soon available to software developers, allowing them to take full advantage of the modern network and computer infrastructures. The majority of these infrastructures offer a wide range of configuration options and capabilities that can be programmed using the suitable commands or applications. Nowadays, the behaviour of devices and equipment can be deeply affected programmatically, concerning their energy efficiency, their flexibility in adapting to changing conditions and their functionality in general. But in most cases, this also requires a deep knowledge of vendor specific tools or technology specific parameters, while it is not humanly possible to intervene every time a new situation has arisen.

The ARCADIA platform will introduce an innovative way of addressing such issues. The basis will be a model describing all the characteristics of the infrastructure and the related actions that can be performed.

The next meeting is a technical meeting and will be held in Oslo from 6 July to 8 of July 2015. It will be organized by SINTEF. The main issues for discussion will be the orchestrator’s functions and the ARCADIA context model.

2nd Fed4FIRE Review Meeting

On the 30th of April 2015 Yahya Al-Hazmi and Alexander Willner joined the 2nd Fed4FIRE review meeting in Gent, Belgium. They successfully demonstrated the semantic handover between the resource provisioning and monitoring phase of the federated experiment life cycle using FIRE standard APIs implemented by FITeagle. The subsequent discussions with the EC reviewers were fruitful and the importance of the work and the appealing visualization was acknowledged. Overall, the Fed4FIRE review was positive to two major outcomes: First, tools have to be more user friendly. Second, the project officer urged to get in contact with the Cloud, IoT, M2M, 5G and Industry 4.0 community to design and execute experiments in these contexts using Fed4FIRE.

FLEX Kick-Off meeting

Self-driving cars, Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things, the Tactile Internet for wireless, real-time control of machines: all of these visionary topics need a quantum leap in the efficiency, service scope and availability of mobile communication infrastructure and networks. Fraunhofer FOKUS and Fraunhofer HHI are contributing with their comprehensive know-how and solutions to a consortium of manufacturers, carriers and research institutions, who are working on prototypes for early-stage 5G communications infrastructure and features, and are aiming to implement these into the 5G Berlin test bed.

New Toolkit: Open5G-MTC: Toolkit for high number of devices

Fraunhofer FOKUS NGNI competence center is very happy to present a new toolkit as part of its 5G Playground testing environment.
Within the 5G environment a huge number of devices will be connected to the network, using different communication requirements (delay/capacity), different communication patterns (on exceptional events, regular, continuous), different reliability requirements and information trust levels. Easy remote management/administration/calibration will also be needed.

Open5GMTC is a practical implementation based on ETSI M2M, oneM2M and OMA LWM2M standards with the main target of achieving more flexibility, programmability, resilience, faster response and security within a 5G environment for the Machine to Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IOT) communication.

Open5GCore: Enhanced Benchmarking

As part of the Open5GCore developments, the benchmarking tool as well as the correspondent core network has been extended to support evaluation and assessment of handover procedures, opening the way towards a comprehensive qualitative evaluation of different core network solutions, concepts and prototypes. Additionally, the benchmarking tool can be used for evaluating the opportunity of deploying mobile network components on top of cloud infrastructures.

OpenSDNCore: Service Function Chaining (SFC)

OpenSDNCore network functionality was extended with a Service Function Chaining (SFC) solution inspired by the IETF standards. The SFC solution enables the dynamic deployment of virtual network functions across multiple data centers and constitutes the basis of further research in the area of cloud network elasticity, resilience, load balancing and high availability.

OpenMTC New Feature Available! Integration with Protocol Adapter for Health devices in the FI-STAR project

The Health Device Profile (HDP) Bluetooth Device Adapter is a component of the protocol adapter, which handles Android devices supporting the Bluetooth HDP as well as the Zephyr BioHarness. These protocols enable healthcare and fitness device usage models, e.g. runners using biosensors for monitoring fitness goals, a chronic condition patient with a biosensor, etc.
These devices also implement the ISO 11073 family standards promoted by the Continua Alliance.
This work was carried out with the support of the FI-STAR project (“Future Internet Social and Technological Alignment Research”), an integrated project funded by the European Commission through the 7th ICT - Framework Program (318389).

OpenMTC and OpenSDNCore integration M2M back-end as a Service

Fraunhofer FOKUS announces the integration of two of its most powerful platforms: The Open Machine Type Communications (OpenMTC) platform and the Open Software Defined Networking Core (OpenSDNCore) platform.
OpenSDNCore is a practical implementation of the future network evolution paradigms, realizing Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Network (SDN) concepts, providing early prototyping of a service enablement platform on top of common infrastructure components.
This integration enables a dynamic cloud deployment of M2M services using OpenMTC based on OpenSDNCore. M2M back-end as a Service is already being used within the Smart City TRESCIMO testbeds (Test-beds for Reliable Smart City Machine to Machine Communication).

ARCADIA: Successful kick-off

High Representative EU Commissioner for Digital Economy, Günther Öttinger, visits the FI-STAR Exhibition Stand at the NetFutures 2015 Conference

After officially opening the Conference on March 23rd 2015, at the Egg Conference Center in Brussels, the High Representative EU Commissioner visited the exhibition and took time to receive a detailed briefing on the progress of the FI-STAR project with a focus on the uptake of the FI-STAR technology by industrial stakeholders. At the end of his visit, the high Commissioner thanked the FI-STAR Management A. Gavras, S. Covaci and J. Turpie for their dedication and asked DG CNECT Director M. Campolargo to personally inform him about the projects' evolution.

The UNIFI Community grows

The newly joining members are leading universities from Europe, South Asia, South America and Africa.

TRESCIMO project at the NetFutures conference

On the 9th of March Alexander Willner presented two papers about the semantic management of federated Interclouds on the 4th International IEEE Workshop on Cloud Computing, Interclouds, Multiclouds, Federations, and Interoperability in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Cloud Engineering (IC2E) in Tempe, Arizona, USA. Further, as a panelist, he discussed existing Intercloud architecture implementations in ongoing projects and future directions.

OpenMTC presents at Internet of the Things Applications Europe 2015: The open platforms as key enabler for developing IoT applications

OpenMTC team will be presented at the Internet of the Things Applications Europe 2015. This event will be held at the Estrel Berlin Convention Center on April 27-28th 2015. The conference will address various technological business technologies and present different approaches that pave the way for enabling innovations based on M2M and IoT open platforms, as well as some of the successfully stories that have been developed at Fraunhofer FOKUS based on the OpenMTC. Additionally to the conference, on April 27th there will be a tour in the Fraunhofer FOKUS laboratories to show the capacities of the OpenMTC via two demos: Remote Control of Robots and Smart Building Sensing.



KuVS NGSDP Fachgespräch at Fraunhofer FOKUS

The 10th KuVS Next Generation Service Delivery Platforms (NGSDP) Workshop/Fachgespräch was hosted at Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS in Berlin, Germany on March 16, 2015 with the theme "Virtualization Impacts on Service Delivery Infrastructures – SDN, NFV and Clouds".

Around 30 experts from German, Swiss, Polish and Italian academia and industry joined the interactive workshop to discuss innovative ideas, concepts and results in the scope of 5G, SDN and NFV. 13 speakers presented their work in four sessions. Each session ending with a highly interactive Q&A panel. As part of the workshop, Fraunhofer FOKUS demonstrated its Open5GCore and OpenSDNCore toolkits.

The FLEXCARE project adds significant value to the EU FP7 FLEX project, by providing highly relevant new capabilities to experimenters in the field of LTE research and beyond (5G).

It is addressing the following two objectives:
1. Testbed extensions to the FLEX infrastructure by using Advanced Open LTE interfaces, that will be made interoperable with the existing FIRE control and management tools adopted by FLEX and
2. Testbed software enhancements, by means of building tools for supporting experimentation with the LTE equipment, which will be fully integrated with the existing tools.

FLEXCARE aims at extending the FLEX infrastructure with a new LTE testbed facility, namely the FUSECO Playground testbed. This allows significant extension and enhancement of the FLEX project infrastructure allowing for new possibilities of mobile broadband (2G, 3G, LTE, WiFi) experiments.
Furthermore, FLEXCARE adds new capabilities supporting 5G research within Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN). These capabilities are realized through our OpenSDNCore and Open5GCore toolkits that will allow to instantiate orchestrated LTE functions (e.g. PDN-GW, S-GW, MME) virtualized and software-based as well as to separate the control plane from the user plane using the OpenFlow technology.
The major goal of the integration of the FUSECO Playground into the FLEX architecture is to provide remote access to these resources and services to FLEX experimenters. The FUSECO Playground is powered by the FITeagle toolkit which is developed by TUB, who  is also leading and participating in the standardization efforts for the next GENI/FIRE APIs and resource descriptions.

FIESTA Kickoff Meeting at Fraunhofer FOKUS

Fraunhofer hosted the FIESTA kickoff meeting in Berlin on February 12th and 13th. With 14 partners, the project aims to provide an experimental infrastructure for enabling IoT testbed/platforms operators to interconnect their facilities in an interoperable way based on the European FIRE testbeds. Furthermore, FIESTA is going to facilitate researchers and solution providers to design and deploy large scale integrated applications that transcend the (silo) boundaries of individual IoT platforms or testbeds. The OpenMTC team at FOKUS is going to bring the OpenMTC into such federated infrastructure as an integral element of the FUSECO Playground.

UNIFI Workshop in Berlin, 11.-14. Nov. 2014


The DAAD – UNIFI project held this year its annual workshop hosted by the TU Berlin on the premises of the Fraunhofer FOKUS Institute in Berlin, Germany.

During the workshop, the UNIFI partners discussed the achievements to date and the further plans and were given the opportunity to participate in a number of interactive demonstrations of the TU-Berlin and FOKUS teaching and research facilities. For the first time, new partners from Indonesia (Telkom University), South Africa (Rhodes University) and Colombia (Universidad de los Andes) were attending the workshop and expressed their interest in joining the UNIFI community as associate partners. The DAAD-UNIFI partners and associate partners participated also to the co-located Fokus Fuseco Forum 2014 conference  and exchanged valuable insights with leading European peers in the Future Internet and Next Generation Networks space.

FI-STAR Technical Director delivers popular eheatlh tutorial , keynote speach and is awarded outstanding service award

HealthCom’14 in Natal, Brazil between 15th and 18th of October 2014

15th of October tutorial „Future Internet Platform Centered eHealth Service Delivery“ was presented by Dr. Stefan Covaci, FI-STAR Technical Director and Senior Solutions Architect Future Internet Services Platforms, Technical University Berlin.

The tutorial was very well attended and besides presenting the use of the FI-PPP technology for decentralised ehealth services in smart cities, the tutorial provided insights on the effectiveness and efficiency gains achieved by the different stakeholders and across supply-chains centered on the FI-STAR ‘eHealth Platform Provider’.

A practical, hands-on example of the development and the deployment of a generic health-telemonitoring application using the FI-STAR platform, was given on-line using a VPN connection from Stefan’s mobile in Natal to the App-developer and App-administrator in the  FI-STAR Development Portal and to the FI-STAR Administrator Portal in the Reference Deployment Environment in TUBIT data center in Berlin.

The performance of this remote-access to the FI-STAR Reference Deployment Environment in Berlin demo was excellent and convinced the audience about the viability of the FI-STAR technical and business models. At the end of the tutorial Stefan was awarded the IEEE Communications Society Tutorial Instructor Diploma.

On 16th of October, FI-STAR Technical Director Stefan Covaci gave a key-note speech as a participant in the panel – “Emerging eHealth Applications:big data, analytics, telemedicine and mHealth” (http://www.ieee-healthcom.org/panels.html). At the end of the panel session, Stefan was awarded the IEEE Communications Society appreciation diploma.

At the end of Health’Com14 the FI-STAR contributions and the participation of FI-STAR representatives was highly appreciated and IEEE Communications Society “Outstanding Service Awards” were made to FI-STAR’s Stefan Covaci and Maria Joao Barros.

Furthermore FI-STAR’s Stefan Covaci and Anastasius Gavras were invited to act as Programme Committee Members of the next Health’Com15 which is to be held in Boston, USA.

Finally the proposal from TUM and TUB presented by FI-STAR Medical Director Professor Christoph Thuemmler, to host the 2016 edition of Health’Com in Munich, Germany was accepted. All in all a very successful Health and Technology conference where FI-STAR delivered. We look forward to the Boston and Munich conferences. 

ERASMUS MUNDUS Projekt „TEAM“ started


The ERASMUS MUNDUS Projects „TEAM“ had its kick-off meeting on 6-7 October at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC), Paris, France.
“TEAM – Technologies for Information and Communication, Europe – East Asia Mobilities” is an European Commission Erasmus Mundus Action 2 / Strand 2 Mobility Project aiming at developing new and innovative technologies, enhancing carrer prospects of young researchers and competitiveness of researchers, promoting intercultural understanding and increasing the attractiveness of European higher education. Until the end of 2017, leading East-Asian universities from Japan (University of Tokyo, Keio University, Nara Institute of Science & technology) and South Korea (Korea Advanced Institute of Science & technology, Gwangiu Institute of science & Technology, Chungnam National University)and leading European universities (Université Pierre et Marie Curie (France), Technische Universität Berlin (Germany), Aalto University (Finland), Eötvös Lorand University (Hungry), University of Trento (Italy), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain)), will engage in exchanging PhDs, Post-Docs and staff members according to mutually-recognised academic and research programmes.
Together with UPMC, TUB was co-initiator of the project and is represented in the Consortium Management Board by Prof. Thomas Magendanz  and Dr.-Ing. Stefan Covaci as scientific representative and project leader.  As industrial associate partner of TUB / AV, the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS contributes with its NGNI Laboratories and industrial  R&D  agenda, to the implementation of the project-plan. Thematic foci of TUB / AV within “TEAM” are sind 5G, Software Defined Infrastructures / Software Defined Networks / Network Function Virtualisation, Machine to Machine Communications / Internet of Things and Future Internet Usage Areas.
“TEAM” is well positioned on TUB / AV roadmap  for academic international co-operations, as a natural follow-up of the DAAD-sponsored project “UNIFI” with partner-universities from Thailand, Viet Nam, South Africa and Chile (www.daad-unifi.org).

CI-FIRE/FanTaaStic workshop in Paris


The joint workshop "How to push research boundaries and gain competitive edge", organised by CI-FIRE, EIT ICT Labs and its project FanTaaStic was held on 27 June in the Zamansky Tower at UPMC in Paris.

The workshop was an opportunity to learn about the FanTaaStic Brokerage Service which is intended to connect users and experimenters with testbed owners. The FanTaaStic platform will be trialled until the end of 2014 and launched commercially thereafter. The technical and non-technical pre-requisites for being able to offer testbed resources (such as FIRE facilities) for research, education or busuiness purposes, via the FanTaaStic Brokerage Service, were explained.

TRESCIMO 2nd Plenary Meeting in Heidelberg


The second plenary meeting of the TRESCIMO project was held from 26-28 May 2014 in Heidelberg. After interesting technical discussions a more detailed architecture has been specified. We're pleased to see CSIR as an additional TRESCIMO testbed and the interconnection between the testbed will start soon. For enabling local testing, sensor hardware was presented and exchanged between the partners. Finally, the project management and the dissemination has been reviewed and we're excited to work on the realisation of our ambitious project within the next couple of month.

XIFI Training session - Berlin

We are pleased to announce you that the XIFI project is organizing its first training session on May 15, 2014 at Fraunhofer FOKUS premises, Berlin, Germany.

This first training session is dedicated to developers (of FI-PPP Use Case projects, Web Entrepreneurs, Start-Ups) who want to use the XIFI Infrastructures and services to run their experimentations (e.g. new FI-PPP based services).

UNIFI Lecture at the University of Cape Town

From April 7 – 9 , Prof Magedanz has delivered his annual UNIFI lecture in the Department of Electrical Engineering (http://www.ebe.uct.ac.za) and the Centre for Broadband Networks (http://coe.uct.ac.za). This year the lecture title has been "Future Internet Impacts on Next Generation Telecommunication Services and Network Infrastructures“.

This year the lectures covered most recent Smart City ICT platforms, such as SDN, NFV, IoT, M2M, Cloud technologies as well as Cloud based SDPs. The lecture series also pointed out the use of the Fraunhofer FOKUS / TU Berlin OpenXXX toolkits and Testbeds (Playgrounds) enabling "Testbed as a service" and "Testbed to go“ approaches for advanced academic and industry research and prototyping in the aforementioned technology fields.

The MCN project at the Future Internet Assembly


Marius Corici and Giuseppe Carella joined FIA 2014 in Athens. They presented to the community the last achievements of the MCN project, particularly with hands-on demonstration of the future flexible access, core and services deployments in an end-to-end scenario proving the feasibility of complex virtualised network infrastructures.

3. Cloud-based Service Delivery Platforms and Networks 

Around 45 students attended the lectures.

NUBOMEDIA: the cloud for future communication services


The European project NUBOMEDIA researches how new technologies such as computer vision, augmented reality, 3D video or multisensory data can be used for creating novel communication paradigms going beyond phone calls and video conferences.

Traditional communication services act just as mere information transport systems. For example, when we perform a phone call, we just receive the speech signal coming from the person at the other end of the line. However, new techniques such as computer vision, augmented reality and the advanced processing of audio-visual flows allow creating novel communication paradigms useful in diverse areas such as e-Health, security, defence, video games or smart TV.

Prof. Luis Lopez, form URJC, presents it in this way: “We can imagine, for example, WebRTC video conferences for telemedicine where the own network infrastructure offers biometric information extracted from the computational analysis of patients’ video and speech. We may also think about social video games where users connect through smartphones and tablets to interact with virtual objects and characters embedded into their exchanged streams. When looking to advertising, we envision personalized commercials where the end-user is embedded as the main character of the spot. Applications for security and defence are also numerous when considering person-to-machine communication models combined with computer vision techniques for people or object detection and tracking.”

These types of services are not currently mainstream due to the traditional lack of capability on networks. However, in the last few years, the emergence of high bandwidth access technologies, such as fiber or 4G, is making possible their mass adoption. Nevertheless, the creation of such services still requires very important infrastructure investments and development efforts that are not compatible with reasonable business models, and this is why they are not popular. NUBOMEDIA has the objective of addressing this problem by creating a cloud platform allowing small enterprises and individual programmers to develop their very own interactive multimedia communication services without significant investments or efforts and in a secure, efficient and scalable way. NUBOMEDIA plans to expose a number of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to end developers suitable for creating a next generation of multimedia services where the information exchange is enriched through processing capabilities such as face detection and recognition, interaction with virtual objects, 3D scenario reconstruction, advanced video mixing, video recording and recovery, etc. From the perspective of programmers, the NUBOMEDIA infrastructure just behaves as an infinite supercomputer where the processing capabilities can elastically increase to adapt to the load offered by end users.

To foster innovation and catalyse the emergence of a whole ecosystem of applications and users around NUBOMEDIA, all research results of the project will be released as open source software following flexible licenses such as LGPL or Apache.

NUBOMEDIA is coordinated by Rey Juan Carlos University and has distinguished research and industrial partners including the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS, the Technical University of Berlin, the Stefan cel Mare Suceava University, the VTT Institute, Telecom Italia, ZED Worldwide, LiveU, Visual Tools and Naevatec.

TRESCIMO Kick-Off in Cape Town


TRESCIMO is a project about Testbeds for Reliable Smart City Machine-to-Machine Communication. It started with a Kick-Off Meeting from 13-15 January 2014 in Cape Town. Eight partner organisations take part in the integrating project under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP 7). More information about the project here.


FI-Star Demo during the 4th FUSECO Workshop


The objective of FI-STAR project is to establish early trials in the Health Care domain building on Future Internet (FI) technology leveraging on the outcomes of FI-PPP Phase 1 projects. During the 4th FUSECO Forum, FI-Start project has demonstrated the validation of different Generic Enablers (GE) by means of two end-to-end service scenarios. The first scenario focuses on patient monitoring application, where a patient requires observation of his/her health status by means of measured values (e.g. heartbeats). Therefore, such data is first showed to the patient locally on his mobile phone and simultaneously sent periodically to a medical service center, where they can track patient heart rate in a real-time through a web-browser. In the second scenario, if the patient heartbeats above certain threshold (e.g. higher than 75 beats), then an emergency call is automatically established between the patient and the fixed health assistance service or to even dynamically to the nearest one.



FFF 2013 was the fourth event of the FOKUS FUSECO Forum series and looked at fixed and mobile Next Generation Networks Evolution towards virtualized network control and service platforms and seamless Cloud-based H2H and M2M applications. More than 200 participants from 30 nations joined the event. So again we followed our tradition and incorporate new trends within the established tutorial and workshop streams on day one, such as Network Virtualisation and Open Flow, cloud-based human-to-human (H2H) and machine-to-machine (M2M) service provision, as well as recent advances in WebRTC and HTML5 technologies.

With participation of more than 50 guests and speakers the international FI-PPP workshop successfully provided a comprehensive overview of the status of all currently running projects of the FI-PPP programme.

The second day united the different tracks of the previous day under the main theme of this year´s FFF by a full day conference "Smart Communication Platforms for Emerging Smart Cities" which featured 18 presentations from various international network operators and standardization bodies.

FiSTAR plenary meeting and project review in Edinburgh, UK


On the FiSTAR project plenary meeting in Edinburgh, UK, 18-20 Nov 2013, Hakan and Adel prepare the demonstration setup for the EU project review, where it was well received.

The demo presented the interaction among selected FI-WARE Generic Enablers (GEs) in the context of secure healthcare sensor data aquisition and processing. Three scenarios were defined, evaluating IoT and IDM GEs.

In the first, demonstrating a patient monitoring use case, the heart rate is monitored and shown locally on an Android smartphone. The latter also hosts a protocol adapter for forwarding the data to IoT Gateway, delivering the data according to their priority and status of the Connection Davice Interface (CDI). An IoT broker aggregates the data and forwards them to the Context Broker, which allows the web-based application to visualise them.

The second scenario initiates an emergency call according to certain thresholds. When the heart rate triggers the threshold, the IoT Gateway forwards the data to the IoT broker with a high priority, thus the application can initiate an emergency call session to the clinical services automatically.

The third scenario illustrates the FI-WARE Identity Management (IDM) and Access Control, allowing to define dedicated roles (such as doctors and patients) and allocate policies, e.g. who can access which data, accordingly.

IEEE M2MCIP major success


On IEEE LCN in Sydney, Dr Tom Pfeifer from TU Berlin, Germany, chaired the new IEEE M2MCIP workshop on 24 Oct 2013, focusing on the emerging trend of Machine-to-Machine communication, providing the connectivity in the Internet of Things. The workshop provided a platform for researchers and practitioners to address and discuss challenges and proposed solutions to the open and upcoming issues in M2M, as state-of-the-art solutions and work in progress. Thus, the workshop, well visited with 40 attendees, consisted of a blend of an excellent keynote speech, given by Prof. Sanjay Jha, University of New South Wales as well as six technical papers, sparking a round-table discussion in an interactive workshop atmosphere.

UNIFI Guest Lecture at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST)


Oct 14-17. Dr.-Ing. Tom Pfeifer from TU Berlin, Germany, gave a three-day guest lecture in the HUST MSc class for computer communications, covering the development of the Internet of Things, its Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication backbones, open platforms and application areas in smart cities and smart environments. The visit was complemented by talks to the Mobifone labs about collaboration in research and development.

The programme is co-funded by the Marie Curie Programme of the European Union (Co-funding of Regional, National, and International Programmes) and is open to all fields of research represented at the TU Berlin. "Too much smartness" - Talk and discussion at the University of Rostock


In the 2013 Interdisciplinary Symposium at the University of Rostock, Germany, "Too much smartness - how much assistance do we need", Dr. Tom Pfeifer was invited for the introductory talk. He presented a keynote titled "Smart inside, Smart outside, Smart for whom? Yesterday, today, tomorrow." and participated in the panel discussion.

The talk started with a historical perspective of Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing, and the lessons learnt in the past 20 years, to analyse the current paradigm shift towards fewer but more intelligent devices and converging smart environments.

It concluded that new value chains will be enabled by open communication platforms.


The symposium was organised by the research group MuSAMA (Multimodal Smart Appliance Ensembles for Mobile Applications).

Dr. Tom Pfeifer at the ANGA COM Congress


Dr.-Ing. Tom Pfeifer presented the OpenMTC platform in an invited talk on the ANGA COM Congress 2013 in Cologne, titled "Machine Communication Platforms for Smart Home Applications", and participated in the following Panel discussion.

The talk was particularly successful as it demonstrated a solution to integrate the heterogeneity of Smart Home approaches discussed beforehand by industry players such as Cisco, Samsung, Microsoft, Google, and the German Cable operators, in the Connected Home Summit.

XIFI kick-off meeting


The project started officially on 1. April 2013, and all participants of the project gathered in Rome from 15-17 April 2013 to discuss the approach and agree on the concrete next work items. It was the first time that all project participants gathered in one room to exchange their plans, align their ideas and listen to presentations about the FI-PPP programme overall as well as the impact the FI-WARE architecture has on the work of XIFI.

XIFI is the project in the Public-Private-Partnership on Future Internet (FI-PPP) that is responsible for the establishment of the infrastructure capacity that will enable the development and deployment of countless new service and applications for the future Internet across Europe.

The meeting was hosted by the co-ordinating organisation, Telecom Italia, at its premises in Rome. More than 60 participants attended the meeting.

FI-Star, an Integrated Project in the European FP7, was kicked off in April 2013.

It investigates the suitability of the Fi-Ware platform, developed in the Future Internet Public Private Partnership (FI-PPP) framework, in field trials of seven different e-health scenarios, in seven different EU countries.

As a novelty, it introduces the hybrid cloud approach, protecting sensitive patient data in a state-of-the-art cloud architecture, by separating the public and the private part of the cloud functionalities.

Like a real operator network: Testbed for future mobile broadband communication


OpenEPC Release 4 now available

With its OpenEPC software, Fraunhofer FOKUS provides a testbed toolkit that enables prototyping of seamless IP connectivity-related features like QoS (Quality of Service) and charging, mobility management, access control and security for 3GPP and non-3GPP wireless network technologies including 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE), 3G, 2G and WLAN. OpenEPC Rel. 4 is now delivered to customers and partners around the globe. As main new feature the testbed can be equipped with real devices and radio networks mirroring the operator network very close to reality.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz, head of the FOKUS competence center Next Generation Network Infrastructures (NGNI) and professor within the electrical engineering and computer sciences faculty at the Technische Universität Berlin, explains: “We are very proud to provide OpenEPC Release 4 to our customers and partners. OpenEPC was successfully introduced in 2010 with lots of functional extensions demanded by customers during the last two years. With Rel. 4, the toolkit has reached its functional maturity state. It mirrors the operator network very close to reality as it interconnects smoothly with cost-efficient radio network equipments and enables connectivity for common mobile devices. I’m convinced that OpenEPC will reduce the gap between research and development and networks which are already in practical use by enabling the efficient realization of meaningful testbeds.”

The toolkit is scalable starting from a complete core network in a single box, up to medium-scale distributed proof of concept testbeds. OpenEPC Rel. 4 is available under a multitude of paid binary, source code, or redistribution licenses.

Prof. Thomas Magedanz appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Chile


On November 20, 2012, Prof. Thomas Magedanz, head of the Competence Center NGNI and professor at the TU Berlin, has taken up his visiting professorship at the Faculty of “Physical and Mathematical Sciences” of the University of Chile with a three-day lecture series on “Next Generation Network (NGN) to Future Internet (FI) Evolution”.

Prof. Thomas Magedanz has taken up his visiting professorship at the Faculty of “Physical and Mathematical Sciences” of the University of Chile in Santiago de Chile with a three-day series of lectures on the topic “Next Generation Network (NGN) to Future Internet (FI) Evolution – The role of SDPs, EPC, IMS, MTC for Smart City Communication Needs” on November 20, 2012.  The lecture series was aimed at graduate students in Masters and PhD programs and, for the time being, will be continued annually until 2015. The Faculty has been existing since the University was founded in 1842. Today, 4500 undergraduate and 1000 graduate students study at this institution. At the Faculty of “Physical and Mathematical Sciences” alone, more than 60 laboratories are available for purposes of research and teaching. In these labs, teaching staff and students work closely together with Chilean telecommunications service providers.  

Chile is an interesting partner country for German telecommunications as well as information and communication technology (I&C) research, as it has a small but very competitive telecommunications, entertainment and I&C market. Companies have a great interest in testing new technologies and introducing them in their own country, as well as in the large neighboring countries Brasil and Colombia. In order to further strengthen the partnership between Germany and Chile, and to expand it to other research fields and Latin American countries, Fraunhofer FOKUS has, like other research institutions, recently opened an Innovation Office in Santiago de Chile.  

Technologies for a „Next Generation Network“ and „Future Internet“ enable a seamless communication between stationary and mobile devices and thus play a significant role in the development of an innovative and adaptive telecommunications infrastructure for newly emerging Smart City applications. For example, the researchers want to implement a „Smart Campus“ at the University of Chile with the help of toolkits from the Competence Center NGNI.  

Aside from his visiting professorship at the University of Chile, Prof. Magedanz has also been holding a visiting professorship at the University of Cape Town in South Africa since 2007.

3rd FOKUS Future Seamless Communication Forum 2012, Berlin, Germany

The 3rd international FOKUS Future Seamless Communication (FUSECO) Forum themed “Convergence of Human-to-Human and Machine-to-Machine Communications within Emerging Open Smart City ICT Infrastructures – Using Open APIs, RCS, IMS, MTC, EPC, and LTE as Enablers for Emerging Future Internet Application Domains” has been held at Fraunhofer FOKUS in Berlin, Germany on November 15-16, 2012 with big engagement of IEEE Comsoc members acting as tutorial speakers and chairmen at the event. The event was attended by around 200 industry and academic experts from more than 30 nations, which represents an increase of the number of attendees of 25% compared to the last year´s event. The FUSECO Forum is a unique annual event, providing a networking and technical discussion platform for international network operators, standardization development organizations, and leading academic organizations dealing with the evolution of service control platforms for fixed and mobile next generation networks towards Smart Cities. In this context the FUSECO Forum took a holistic view on global Long-term Evolution (LTE) rollout and coincident deployment of Evolved Packet Core (EPC) platforms, the usage of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) for the provision of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and emerging Rich Communications Services (RCS), competing with successful over the top (OTT) voice and video services, as well as machine to machine (M2M) / machine type communication (MTC) services and platforms and their role within emerging smart city information and communication platforms and the Future Internet.

1st Workshop on Future Internet in Academia has successfully taken place on Aug 3, 2012 as part of ICCE 2012 in Hue (Imperial City of Vietnam), Vietnam between Aug 1-3, 2012, www.icce2012.org. Chaired by Dr. Stefan Covaci (Technische Universität Berlin) and Prof. Nguyen Thanh (Hanoi University of Science and Technology), this workshop brought together key academic, industrial and governmental players to discuss UNIFI topics. The workshop was organized around 6 key-notes and a panel discussion.

OpenMTC Release 1 is available


Building upon the great success of OpenIMS and OpenEPC, Fraunhofer FOKUS, supported by Technische Universität Berlin, released a new Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication platform: OpenMTC. This platform is inspired by the ETSI TC M2M specifications, namely TS 192.921 and TS 102.690. OpenMTC consist of a gateway service capability layer (GSCL) to support a variety of different sensor technologies and a network service capability layer (NSCL) to integrate with other service platforms and to support heterogeneous application domains such as Utilities, Transport & Logistics, Automotive, and Smart Cities.


New DAAD Partnership Program


The department AV (Department of Telecommunication Systems) at Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) is leader and coordinator in a new DAAD partnership program starting under the name of UNIFI. Together with universities from South Africa, Chile , Thailand and Vietnam TUB/AV is working on sustainable academic structures in Next GenerationNetwork Infrastructures and Future Internet technology at universities in developing countries from the southern hemisphere.


6th KuVS Fachgespräch NGSDP


On April 04, 2012 the 6th Workshop Next Generation Service Delivery Platform (NG SDP) has been organized by Fraunhofer FOKUS in Berlin, Germany. Around 40 workshop participants discussed the topic of "M2M impacts on SDP Evolution". We are more than happy to continue this successful series of events attracting experts from industry, academia, and standardization. The workshop covered different aspects ranging from SDP IoT event integration and vertical M2M applications to cloud computing and M2M traffic influence on mobile networks. Also, a live demonstration of the OpenMTC platform developed by Fraunhofer FOKUS and TU Berlin was shown during the lunch break. The final agenda including links to all presentations can be found below. The next workshop of this series with the topic "Cloud-based Service Platforms for the Future Internet" is planned to be held in October 2012 at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), Winterthur, Switzerland.

Prof. Magedanz  was one of the key speakers at the SDP Asia 2012 in Singapore.

In his speech “Future Internet Impacts on SDP Evolution – Towards Open APIs for Emerging Smart City Applications” he explained the role of IP Multimedia Subsystem, Machine Type Communication, Evolved Packet Core and related Open APIs within emerging Smart City SDPs.

In front of an international audience of experts and leaders Prof. Magedanz calls the Smart Cities Concept the Future Internet Show Case and he described the requirements of  Smart Cities communication infrastructures.

Sebastian Wahle defended his PhD work successfully


Sebastian Wahle defended successfully his PhD thesis “A Generic Framework for Heterogeneous Resource Federation” in the electrical engineering and computer sciences faculty at the TU Berlin on November 15, 2011.

Reviewers have been Prof. Dr. Magedanz (TU Berlin), Prof. Dr. Müller (TU Kaiserslautern), Prof. Dr. Tutschku (Universität Wien, Österreich). Prof. Dr. Küpper (TU Berlin) chaired the evaluation committee.

Jose Simoes defended his PhD work successfully


Dipl.-Ing. Jose Simoes defended on October 13, 2011 succesfully his PhD work entitled „Key Enablers for User-Centric Advertising across Next Generation Networks“ within the Faculty IV – Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at Technische Universität Berlin. Prof. Dr. Magedanz (TU Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Schotten (TU Kaiserslautern) have supervised the work and Prof. Dr. Möller (TU Berlin) was chairman of the evaluation board.

Adel Al-Hezmi has held successfully his PhD defense on 27. May 2011 at the chair of Next Generation Networks (AV) at the electrical engineering and computer sciences faculty of TU Berlin with his thesis on “Efficient Session-based Multimedia Content Delivery in Next Generation Networks”.
Dr. Al-Hezmi is now working as senior researcher group leader at the Qatar University Wireless Innovations Center (QUWIC) in Qatar.

The ETSI TC INT and the ETSI Centre for Testing & Interoperability are organising the fourth IMS Plugtests™, taking place from 9-16 November 2011 in Berlin, Germany.
This year ETSI will focus on the interoperability of 3GPP IMS Rel 8 equipment, RCS, ENUM, AGCF and IPv4/v6 interworking. The purpose of this event is to assess: 

·    the interoperability of core IMS networks, 
·    the interoperability of application servers,
·    the quality of IMS core networks and their conformance to IMS specifications,
·    and to provide feedback to standardization.

FI-WARE Large Scale Project Launched

The internet market has become an important element of the european and worldwide economy and is growing constantly, outperforming most other market segments. In order to provide the ground for the emerging market demands in the internet economy, the European Commission has launched the FP7 Future Internet Public-Private Partnership (FI-PPP) on May 3rd with the Kickoff of the FI-WARE large scale Project in Madrid. During the four day meeting, the course and main objectives for the project have been settled.
In the scope of FI-WARE, the core platform for the Future Internet is going to be defined and realized by introducing an innovative infrastructure for cost-effective creation and delivery of services, providing high QoS and security guarantees.
The Fraunhofer institute FOKUS is a partner in FI-WARE and will significantly define and realize architectural components for the Network and Service Access in the Future internet.
FOKUS has a strong competence in the area of fixed and mobile network architectures of 3G and 4G, which make their OpenEPC software and the open testbed for Future Seamless Communication (FUSECO) valuable building blocks for Future Internet Testbeds in FI-WARE.

Special Interest Group Functional Composition Meeting 10-11.May at Fraunhofer FOKUS, Berlin
The German Lab Special Interest Group on Functional Composition with partners from the Universities of Karlsruhe, Kaiserslautern, Ilmenau, Berlin and Alcatel Lucent will meet at Fraunhofer FOKUS for a two day workshop. The goal of this workshop is to define a cross project definition of interfaces between application and network within Future Internet architectures.

Mobile broadband services – Connecting humans and machines

Crosslinking all ‘things’ and ‘services’ impose in the Future Internet new challenges to control infrastructure and service platforms. Network operators and manufacturers worldwide are looking for high-performance technologies for delivering applications over mobile broadband networks.
To develop technologies for a seamless multi-modal connection between humans and machines, Fraunhofer FOKUS is cooperating with the mobile phone operator Vodafone. The two partners enable fast and efficient implementation of new applications that allow the exchange of information between vehicles and humans. One focus is the prototypical implementation of automotive applications over LTE, which are developed in the context of the BMBF project CoCarX.
Fraunhofer FOKUS has provided the two testbed infrastructures OpenIMS Core and OpenEPC to the Vodafone Multivendor Test Center (MVTC). "The by us developed OpenEPC allows the deployment of applications and cloud-based services over LTE and UMTS networks," explains Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz, Fraunhofer FOKUS. The OpenIMS Core provides the technological basis to develop new multimodal applications close to practice.
The developed OpenIMS and OpenEPC based applications are presented for the first time at the closing event of CoCarX, on 25 May 2011 at the Vodafone Test & Innovation Center in Duesseldorf.

Packet Tracking Software Release 0.9 available

With the effort of the Technical University (Chair AV) the Packet Tracking Software known from the SIGCOMM 2010 Demo and a Tutorial Video is now made available online on the Platform for Free Tools for Future Internet Research and Experimentation (www.free-t-rex.net) and on the FOKUS Website (www.fokus.fraunhofer.de/go/track). The Packet Tracking Software allows the visualization of packet paths and the experienced transmission quality in a multihop network. Packet Tracking is currently used in Planetlab, VINI, and G-Lab in order to help researchers to analyze and validate their experiments.

The FOKUS Network Research (NET) competence center has been merged into the FOKUS competence center Next Generation Network Infrastructure (NGNI) in the beginning of 2011. This integration is mainly motivated by the fact, that many research and development synergies exist in the emerging field of Next Generation Network to Future Internet Evolution. The former NET group has gained an outstanding knowhow and global reputation in the field of future internet technologies, particularly in the fields of monitoring and measurements, providing the foundation for new networking concepts, such as self organising networks and cognitive networking. Combining this knowhow and the related software tools with the existing NGNI expertise in the context of telecommunication and internet convergence and the related testbed infrastructure tools will reveal a comprehensive offer of research and development skills to our partners and customers. More detailed information can be found on the NGNI website in the near future.

Julius Mueller (TU Berlin) is member in the ETSI group on IMS Network Testing (INT). Julius Mueller and Dragos Vingarzan (Fraunhofer FOKUS) have been selected as experts for Specialist Task Force VN (ETSI/INT) on Update of IMS NNI Test Specifications for 3GPP R9 RCS 3.0 and IMS&EPC.

Panlab wins Future Internet Award
The FP7 project PII was selected among 32 submissions to win the Future Internet Forum (FIF) award for the best initiative that is currently running and nearing completion. The pan-European testbed federation platform prototyped by PII builds upon a federation framework and the resource brokering system "Teagle" whose development is lead by Fraunhofer FOKUS.
According to the Judging Panel, Panlab was "innovate and exemplar" and would have a "high impact". The award was officially presented at the closing plenary of the Future Internet Assembly (FIA) in Ghent on December 17, 2010.

Niklas Blum has successfully completed his defense of his doctoral thesis entitled "Formalization of a Converged Internet and Telecommunications Service Environment" on the 2nd of December 2010. The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz and Prof. Dr. Tiziana Margaria-Steffen from University of Potsdam.

As the 1st FOKUS FUSECO Forum 2010 (FFF 2010) has been a great success, Fraunhofer FOKUS and the Chair "Next Generation Networks (NGN)" from TU Berlin decided to make it a series event. Fraunhofer FOKUS 1st FUSECO Forum 14th and 15th of October

The FUSECO FOUM  is an interactive two day event that represents a technologically focused follow-up to the famous FOKUS IMS Workshop series. IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) has united SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) based control in IP networks, EPC (Evolved Packet Core) has the potential to become the common control platform for any IP application. From the technical maturity and global recognition points of view, EPC stands today where IMS stood five years ago. Therefore it is the right time to launch a new workshop series to create global awareness in academia and industry. The new FOKUS FUSECO Forum is continuing the famous FOKUS IMS Workshop series by concentrating on a key enabling technology for future communication. 3rd GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch on NG SDPs

The 3rd GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch on NG SDPs will be held on the 14th of October at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories Auditorium 3, Ernst-Reuter-Platz 7, 10587 Berlin.  The main topic is  “Towards SDPs for the Future Internet”. Prof. Magedanz is in the steering committee and the TU Berlin will present QoS aware Cross-Layer Service Delivery Platform. Look for more details here

ICIN 2010 held from  11-14th of October in Berlin

The ICIN 2010 topic is "Weaving Applications into the Network Fabric - The Transformational Challenge". The ICIN is held at the Deutsche Telekoms Representative Office and Park Inn Hotel in Berlin. Prof. Thomas Magedanz is part of the Technical Programm Committee at the 2011 International Workshop on networks and Service Security which is held in conjunction with 4th IFIP NTMS conference on 7-10th of February 2011 in Paris, France. On 11-12 May 2010 a NSF/FIRE Workshop on Federating Computing Resources was held in Princeton, NJ where an extended abstract submitted by Sebastian Wahle was accepted. The workshop minutes will be available shortly.   

KUVS Workshop Future Internet
The 5th GI/ITG Kuvs workshop on Future Internet took place in Stuttgart on the premises of Alcatel Lucent on the 9th of June 2010. The AV co-authored papers "Scenarios for a Future Internet based on Cross-Layer Functional Composition" and "Federation Interoperability – Dealing With Heterogeneity"
Sebastian Wahle, Thomas Magedanz, Konrad Campowsky were presented.

Tridentcom 2010
This year’s Tridentcom held in Berlin, 18-20 May, was a big success with around 130 attendees, featuring the ONIT workshop, two on-site Tutorials (Future Internet Technologies and Getting started with Teagle), and a 2-day technical program covering 11 sessions. Several keynotes from high level FIRE and GENI representatives gave an interesting insight into current and upcoming activities around Testbeds and Experimental Facilities for the Future Internet. We hope to see you again at Tridentcom 2011.

2nd GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch on NG SDPs
The second KuVS “NG Service Delivery Platforms & Service Overlay Networks” expert´s talk on May 6, 2010 at Telefónica o2 Germany in Munich continued the success of the kick-off meeting in Berlin in November 2009.
Around 50 attendants from industry and academia joined the meeting and lively discussed about “Profiting from SDP Capabilities to Deliver Services”. The program consisted of one keynote presentation from Telefónica, five talks from industry and six talks from universities. Presentation slides and pictures are available on the homepage.
Note that interested researchers from academia and industry are welcome to join this open KuVS discussion group!

Invitiation  FUSECO Tutorial - for free
Right before TridentCom 2010, Berlin's FUSECO Playground as joint lab initiative of Fraunhofer FOKUS, the Fraunhofer HHI and the Dt. Telekom Laboratories will present a half-day tutorial which will provide an overview of the future mobile networks and the corresponding 3GPP standards related to the Long Term Evolution (LTE) and the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) followed by first demonstrations established as part of the FUSECO Playground.
