Due to the early provision of local 5G frequencies by the BNetzA, Germany is considered a pioneer in the development of local 5G networks worldwide. By the end of 2021, almost 170 local networks in Germany had been successfully applied for. According to the TMForum, more than 500 private mobile networks are already in operation worldwide. Various market research companies around the world attribute great growth potential to 5G campus networks.

For several years, the "Architekturen der Vermittlungsknoten (AV)" department, in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS, has been actively involved in its lectures and research since 2017 with 5G campus networks, since this network type has a high innovation potential for the 5G evolution as well as 6G research. The department was already involved in the BMWI project IC4F, which wrote in 2020 the BMWI guidelines for 5G campus networks. At the beginning of 2022 has started the CampusOS lighthouse project based on this, which will be funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) with 18.1 million euros over the next three years. The project will be coordinated by Prof. Magedanz and Prof. Stanczak. The goal of CampusOS is to build a modular ecosystem for open 5G campus networks based on open radio technologies and interoperable network components. This should enable manufacturer independence and more competition and innovation in order to strengthen the digital sovereignty of companies in Germany. 22 partners from industry and research are examining different operator models, developing reference architectures, evaluating the interoperability and performance of the integrated solutions in reference test fields. In addition, they test selected scenarios as prototypes in an industrial environment.
