Abstract The articles in this special section are devoted to the integration of satellite networks and the evolution of wireless terrestrial networks toward the fifth generation of cellular networks, universally known simply as 5G. The articles focus on the role that satellite communications will play in the next generation of telecommunication networks in order to complement or extend the features that are expected from the evolution of cellular networks. Specifically, it is worth remarking that although 5G inherently refers to the fifth generation of cellular networks, its shape will actually be that of an ecosystem comprising multiple verticals and transport technologies, among which satellite will also be part of this broad picture. This convergence process is importantly enabled by the standardization activities carried out within the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), which are aimed at issuing Release 16 by the end of 2019, which will contain important system design recommendations regarding the non-terrestrial network components (satellite. HAPs, etc.).
