Dr. Yahya Al-Hazmi received his M.Sc. and PhD (Dr.-Ing.) in Electrical Engineering with specific emphasis on telecommunication systems from Technical University Berlin in 2009 and 2016 respectively. Since then he had been a Research Associate at the research group for Computer Networks and Communications at the University of Passau . He was involved in several European funded FP7 projects, such as AutoI, ResumeNet and EuroNF, particularly focused on network virtualization, Green-IT and Wireless Mesh Networks. Since April 2011 he is working as a Research Fellow, preparing his Ph.D. as well, at the chair of Next Generation Networks (AV) at the Technical University Berlin and at the competence center Next Generation Network Infrastructures (NGNI) at Fraunhofer FOKUS. He was and is currently involved in several European funded FP7 research projects within the context of the major European Future Internet research programs, namely the Future Internet research and development (FIRE) initiative , and the Future Internet Public-Private Partnership (FI-PPP) . His main research interests focus on the federation of ICT resources as well as Future Internet testbeds and platforms, Cloud Computing, Cloud federation (InterCloud), Network Function Virtualization (NVF), measurements and monitoring of ICT infrastructures and services, and semantic ontologies.
Since April 2011 Yahya Al-Hazmi investigates architectures for Next Generation Network infrastructures (NGNI) and Future Internet testbeds in terms of resource federation, control, monitoring, and measurements. His main R&D activities within the context of the European Fed4FIRE  project lie in the development of an architecture for the federation of heterogeneous Future Internet testbeds. He is leading the measuring and monitoring activities within the Fed4FIRE  project supporting various set of measurements and monitoring services across heterogeneous ICT domains serving different user communities (experimenters, federators, and SLA & trustworthy reputation services). In the European FI-PPP FI-STAR  project, Al-Hazmi develops the monitoring solution for the Cloud-based FI-STAR platform, while in the European FI-PPP XIFI  project, he was involved in the management of the Cloud-based infrastructure federation represented through the FIWARE Lab as well as software testing (including units, components, interfaces and integration testing) of the federation architecture of the FIWARE Lab, and also contributed to the XIFI / FIWARE Lab training activities. In the context of the European BonFIRE  project, he has developed the monitoring system of the multi-cloud BonFIRE experimental facility, while his main R&D activities within the context of the European projects OpenLab , FITTING , and INFINITY  lay in designing and developing monitoring and measurements services for Future Internet testbeds.
Between June 2009 and March 2011 he gained valuable experience as a full-time employee at various research projects of the European’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), more specifically Autonomic Internet (AutoI) , ResumeNet and Network of Excellence on the Network of the Future (EuroNF). His research in the AutoI project focused on dynamic creation and deployment of virtual networks, router virtualization and different aspects of virtual router migration. His responsibilities included further development of the open-source software “virtualisation Component Programming Interface (vCPI)”, which was developed by the University of Passau in the context of the AutoI project. This additional development was done in the context of the ResumeNet project to enable the integration of the vCPI in the German Laboratory (G-Lab) research testbed . In the ResumeNet project, his research focused on maintaining the resilience of network services using migration of virtual machines. His activities in EuroNF project included enabling of multi-access communications in wireless mesh networks through virtualization, and optimizing of energy consumption in wireless mesh infrastructures by managing number of active powered-on resources as well as developing new methods to ensure an uninterrupted connectivity despite turning off some resources.

|Abstract||The remarkable success of cloud computing has change the way services and applications are implemented and offered not least because of the flexibility and scalability that such an environment can offer. Cloud federation has tremendous potential for the industry as an effective way to increase the capacity of resources and diversity of offerings while keeping costs relatively low. Yet cloud federation is still in its infancy, with different approaches being introduced, either in terms of architectural design or the availability of test facilities. This paper introduces the FIWARE approach for federating multiple cloud-based infrastructures targeting different fields related to Future Internet and Smart-Cities innovative de- velopments. Sustainability is considered in the focus of our approach. In addition to the traditional cloud services, the FIWARE federation mainly offers a set of general-purpose platform functions and services extended with further facili- ties (e.g. sensing and Software-Defined-Networking (SDN) capabilities) advancing the market with smart infrastructures. These services are available through open (public and royalty- free), vendor-independent APIs supporting open innovation. We present federated infrastructure sustainability considera- tions along with the FIWARE federation architecture design that is implemented and deployed within a federation of 17 cloud-based infrastructures distributed across Europe.|
